In India, summertime can be pretty unbearable because of extreme heat and humidity. So it's always significantly important to keep your AC in supreme shape if you don't want to be all sweaty and exhausted. But no matter how careful we are some little problems always leap up, therefore it's crucial to be aware of some of the common problems that can arise with your split AC and their solutions.

1) AC doesn't turn on:

When your AC doesn't turn on it can be quite annoying. There can be several reasons for this problem. First of all, check if the power supply is properly connected. If the power supply is perfectly fine then you need to make sure that the thermostat is in cool mode. Next, you need to ensure that the external wiring is faultless, as sometimes rodents gawn at the wires which disturbs the power supply. Also, confirm if all the fuses are intact and check the power supply of your house. If all these things turn out to be good, check whether your air filters are clean, if not clean the filters and install them again. Now restart your AC. If it's still not working chances are that there is something wrong with electric components(like PCB, ICs, Capacitors) or motors of the AC. In that case, you will need a professional to take care of it.

2) Indoor unit making a lot of noise:

Another problem you can face is the indoor unit of split AC is making too much noise. This can be because:
● The fan inside the unit is faulty because it has moved from its original position as a result of heavy usage.
● Loads of dust and dirt has accumulated on the fan which makes it vibrate excessively.
Both of these problems can be easily addressed. For the first one, you need to dismantle the whole indoor unit and position the fan in its original place properly. For the second one just dismantling the indoor unit and cleaning the fan should be enough. If you are not comfortable with mechanical tools and dismantling you should get a technician to do it.

3) Stinky air coming out when switched on:

Sometimes on switching on your AC, it emits awful odours. This is not a big issue but this can certainly make your room smell bad and make you feel horrible. This problem usually arises because of the accumulation of dust, dirt and debris inside the drain pipe and drainage tray, with the buildup of water mould grows which gradually starts smelling bad. Then this smell comes out of the vent when you turn on the AC. This problem can be solved by cleaning the drainage system thoroughly and getting rid of all dirt and water. Now your AC would be working perfectly and you can feel the fresh air.

4) Compressor switching off repeatedly

This is yet another common problem that can be seen in split ACs. This problem could arise if your filter is heavily congested by dust and debris. Because of this, your AC has to draw a lot of power to intake air which in turn increases the temperature of the AC above the recommended operating temperature hence causing cutoffs. If you still keep pushing your AC without taking care of the problem it might cost you a lot because the compressor could get permanently damaged. The solution is to take the filter out and clean it properly under running water. If the filter is in very bad shape you might consider replacing it with a new one.

5) The thermostat is broken

This can be a serious problem as the thermostat is the component that allows you to programme your AC according to your desire. Broken AC thermostat can cause many problems, which include not allowing the AC to turn on at all and not letting you configure the AC according to your choice. The most common cause of this problem is the dirt and debris that has gathered in your thermostat, so to make your AC work again you just need to clean the thermostat thoroughly. Open up the thermostat and clean it inside out using soft brushes. This part of the AC is very expensive and fragile we would recommend you to get this job done by a professional.

If you want to keep your AC working like new and don't want these sort of break downs all the time, regular maintenance and service is the key. Regular maintenance and service would increase the longevity of your AC, save you from a lot of headaches and cost you much lesser than having to replace parts. So it's a great idea to get a professional to check your AC once in a while.
